A preview of our upcoming Lots of Little Fires Story.
Taurikura is a powerful story about two people, Kirsty and Kawena, who embody the true spirit of the Treaty of Waitangi | Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Their journey together is one of respect, understanding, and collaboration between two worldviews—Māori and Pākehā. Through their work, they show how different cultures can not only coexist but thrive together, embracing history, acknowledging past grievances, and building a more equitable future for Aotearoa.
At the heart of their mission is Taurikura, a social enterprise rooted in Waikato, dedicated to fostering spaces where everyone can flourish. Their work focuses on two main areas: Treaty education and civic engagement. Through engaging workshops and storytelling, they help communities understand the shared history of Aotearoa, breaking down barriers and empowering people—both Māori and non-Māori—to step into their role in creating a just society.
Their Treaty training uses laughter and open dialogue to make history accessible, helping participants recognize that while they are not responsible for the past, they have the power to shape the future. Through civic education, Taurikura works to uplift Māori and underrepresented communities, increasing political participation and ensuring diverse voices are heard in governance. Their efforts have contributed to a significant increase in Māori representation in local government.
Kirsty and Kawena’s partnership is a living example of what the Treaty can look like in action—two people from different backgrounds working together, valuing each other’s perspectives, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome. They encourage non-Māori to embrace te ao Māori with openness, humility, and a willingness to learn, assuring them that mistakes are a natural and even beautiful part of the journey.
At its core, Taurikura is about hope—the hope for an Aotearoa where all people can stand together, celebrating differences and building a shared future based on mutual respect, understanding, and joy.
